Wrestler of the Year 2017 | Shayna Baszler

When you think of people that have shot to stardom in a very short amount of time, Shayna Baszler should be a no brainer.  With just over two years as an active professional wrestler, Baszler has wrestled in 4 counties, held several championships, and wrestled on WWE programming.  If that isn’t an impressive resume for someone 2 years in the business, I don’t know what is.

Coming into 2017 holding the women’s championship in both Absolute Intense Wrestling and PREMIER Wrestling, 2017 promised to be a strong year for the former MMA athlete.  Shayna started the year with a tour of Japan with the Stardom promotion.  She participated in the Stardom New Year’s Stars 2017 shows, unsuccessfully challenged World of Stardom Champion Io Shirai at the Stardom of Champions show in February, and challenged Toni Storm for the SWA Undisputed World Women’s Title in March.

Stateside, the Queen of Spades defended the AIW Women’s title against Allysin Kay at Girls Night Out 19, Angel Dust at Night of the Creeps, Mia Yim at Absolution 12 and ODB at Throwdown for the Pound 15, a Remix Pro event.  Japan wasn’t the only international travel Shayna planned because in May, she traveled to Australia to participate in the annual NHPW Global Conflict.  While in Australia, she defeated Madison Eagles to win the IndyGurlz Australia title.

As a member of Trifecta, Baszler has a prominent role on the SHIMMER Women’s Athlete’s roster.  Along with Nicole Savoy, Shayna helped Trifecta leader Mercedes Martinez retain the SHIMMER Women’s Championship along with battles the likes of Madison Eagles, Saraya Knight, Shazza McKenzie, and KC Spinelli.

However, the biggest opportunity of Baszler’s career came when she was selected to take part in the 32 woman tournament, WWE’s Mae Young Classic.  During the tournament, Shayna scored victories over newcomer Zeda, fan favorites Mia Yim and Candice LeRae, and SHIMMER stablemate Mercedes Martinez.  Making it to the finals, Shayna was defeated by Kairi Sane.  While she didn’t secure victory in the finals, her matches were enough to earn her a spot at the WWE Performance Center where she has been working house shows since October.  The sky is the limit for Baszler in WWE because there isn’t another like her.  However, if we learned one thing in the Mae Young Classic, the Queen of Spades seems to be more than willing to bring the remainder of the MMA Four Horsewomen to WWE to challenge the NXT Four Horsewomen.
