Wrestler Of The Year 2017 | Misaki Ohata

As the year 2017 comes to an end the Squared Circle Sirens teams will be highlighting different wrestlers from across the globe that we feel have made an impact over the past 365 days! Today we will be looking at Misaki Ohata.

Misaki Ohata walked into 2017 being tag champions in two major promotions with her longtime tag partner, Ryo Mizunami, as Avid Rival. The team lost both the International Ribbon Tag Titles and WAVE Tag titles within the first quarter of the year but are still one of the best teams in joshi wrestling right now.

In the summer Avid Rivals had a high profile best of three series across 3 major promotions against arguably the other best active tag team in the industry, Best Friends (Arisa Nakajima & Tsukasa Fujimoto), unfortunately the series ended with a draw and each team picking up a win but each match was in the top half of each big show they wrestled on.

Much like another Mariko Yoshida trained wrestler, Hiroyo Matsumoto, it’s felt like Misaki hasn’t been given the big championship opportunities that she’s arguably deserving of but the latter half of this year is when Misaki Ohata really starts to shine and eventually wins her first major singles title.

In September she had a bloody hardcore match with Yuki Miyazaki and the following month won the Regina di WAVE title from Rina Yamashita and since then has been defending the belt multiple places, in fact Misaki has defended the belt 5 times which is the same amount Ryo Mizunami defended it but in less than half the time. Hopefully, Misaki Ohata can carry this into a championship reign known for memorable matches since she’s already made herself an active champion and is given more opportunity to shine in big singles matches in 2018.
