Wrestler of the Year 2017 | Mercedes Martinez

As the year 2017 comes to an end the Squared Circle Sirens teams will be highlighting different wrestlers from across the globe that we feel have made an impact over the past 365 days! Today we will be looking at Mercedes Martinez!

Mercedes Martinez is one of the most experienced women on the US independent wrestling scene.  She has done it all.   Since her debut in 2000, she has wrestled across the globe, won titles in foreign countries and been featured in big matches on TV.  In 2014, Martinez took some time away from the business, almost two years.  She returned in 2016 finishing the year strong.  2017 has been no different.

Mercedes started the year challenging for the Shine Championship in a triple threat match against Allyson Kay and Kudos to at Shine 40.   While she didn’t win the gold, Martinez stayed at the top of the card.   At Shine 41, she wrestled Allyson Kay to a time limit draw.  It was Shine 42, however, that the Shine original would finally win gold.  Mercedes and her Las Sicarias teammate Ivelisse won the Shine Tag Team Championship.  Mercedes and Ivelisse have defended the belts against Holidead & Thunder Rosa and Aria Blake & Candy Cartwright.

Martinez entered the year as the SHIMMER Champion.  During the year, she had successful title defenses against Chelsea Green, Candice LaRae, Saraya Knight, Madison Eagles, Mia Yim, Hikaru Shida before dropping the title to former Trifecta stablemate, Nicole Savoy.  She held the World Xtreme Wrestling from October 2016 through October this year.  In February, Mercedes won the WSU World title for the third time after defeating Allie.  She has had successful title defenses against Nevaeh and Jordynne Grace.  North of the border, Mercedes defeated NCW Femmes Fatales International Champion, Stefany Sinclair to start her second reign with the belt.

The highest-profile part of 2017 for The Latina Sensation was her work with WWE.  Mercedes was part of the Mae Young Classic.  In the tournament, she defeated newcomer Xia Li in the first round, Mexico legend Princesa Sugehit in the second round, Abbey Laith in the quarterfinals, before losing to Shayna Baszler in the semifinal round.  The MYC isn’t the only exposure WWE fans have had to Mercedes this year.  She participated in a battle royal for an entry into the fatal four way to crown the NXT Women’s Champion after Asuka vacated.  She also received a shot at the Women’s Champion Ember Moon.

With a career as impressive as Mercedes Martinez, it is incredible to see she is getting so much exposure at such high levels.  She is helping train up and coming talent with the RISE promotion while killing it in matches on WWE programming, while also wrestling alongside Japanese legend Aja Kong in SHIMMER.  2017 has been an incredible year for the Latina Sensation and here’s to another great year in 2018.
