October 22nd, 2016, ECWA will be hosting the ECWA Super 8 ChickFight Tournament. Eight women will be competing in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey to reign supreme. Leading up to this event, the Squared Circle Sirens staff will be talking with the competitors of the tournament.
I had the pleasure to speak with the current ECWA Women’s Champion Deonna Purrazzo.
Casey: Tell us about yourself. What made you decide to become a professional wrestler?
Deonna: “I am 22 years old, and I have been wrestling for just about 4 years! I am trained by Damian Adams and Robbie E, as well as, Rip Rogers at OVW in Louisville, KY. I grew up an athlete, competitive cheerleading and running track so growing up watching wrestling with my brother and I knew that one day, I could be a wrestler too.”
Casey: Who were your inspirations growing up and who are now currently?
Deonna: “As a young girl, Trish Stratus made me what to become a professional wrestler. She was everything I wanted to be. I loved watching her matches with Lita, I loved watching Victoria, Jazz, etc. I loved watching Shawn Michaels, Eddie Guerrero, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, John Cena. However, as I began to wrestle and understand what it is we do on an inside level my inspirations lie within watching Brad Armstrong, Dean Malenko, Chris Benoit, Johnny Saint.”
Casey: Where were you/are you training? How long have you been wrestling?
Deonna: “Like I said, I train under #TeamAdams along side Damian. I have been training for 4 years with him and I attend extra training sessions and seminars w/ Rip Rogers throughout the year!”
Casey: The Super 8 tournament has been a platform for 20 years, giving many of today’s superstars a platform to compete. What would winning the Super 8 mean to you?
Deonna: “As this will be my second Super 8 appearance and I am vying to become the first EVER back to back winner, I know first hand all that winning can do for any of us competing. Just a week after winning the 2015 2nd Annual Women’s Super 8, I made my first appearance on NXT. I have wrestled again in TNA and consistently with Ring Of Honor’s Women of Honor division. I have become Women’s Champion at 5 other promotions AND I have held the ECWA Women’s Championship for 11 months. I think that resume speaks for itself on the stardom that hangs over the head of the winners of the tournament BOTH male AND female. To win the Super 8 AGAIN, that means I will be the only person to accomplish that feet in 20+ years- that would be an honor for me unlike anything else. That would mean I have to work harder and push forward to make 2017 just as memorable and prestigious as this year was!”
Casey: This years Women’s Super 8 Chickfight Tournament has women coming from all over the US. Is there anyone in the tournament you are particularly looking forward to having a chance to compete with?
Deonna: “I am really looking forward to competing against all of the women in the tournament. Competitors are picked at random and we aren’t aware of who we are competing against until right before the match happens, so it leaves an element of surprise for each of us. I really like to watch women from all over and see their progress and the impact they are making in their respective areas so I was able to gives names for whom I thought could really make an impact within the tournament this year. ECWA has gathered a great group of ladies that I would be honored to step in the ring with. Personally, Rachael Ellering is one woman I am particularly looking forward to that possible match with. I’ve been able to see her grow from some of her first matches until now and I am so proud of her, so I’m really hoping to see her in there. I also hope I meet Tasha Steelz and/or Karen Qu in the ring because 9/24 at ECWA they both attacked me. Karen during and Tasha after my match, HOWEVER that is to be expected when I’ve held the championship for THIS long. I have a target on my back going into this tournament and they both… better yet, ALL of the competitors better be ready to become Fluent In Purrazzo!”
You can catch Deonna Purrazzo and the rest of the women in the ECWA Super 8 Chickfight Tournament this Saturday at the the Woodbury Heights Community Center in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey. For tickets and more information on the ECWA Super 8 Chickfight Tournament click here.
